A Bean's Tale of Running

Hi. You may be wondering why the weird title? It may even be the reason you’re at all giving interest to this blog in he first place. Well...I'm not gonna tell you why it’s called this, yet! I'm a Senior Exercise Science student with a final goal of a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I use to be a swimmer but then became a college student and ate and slept. To my dismay the freshmen 15 had mauled me. So, due to my two unstoppable friends I began to run...actually it was more of an attempt to move on land when I knew the only grace I ever had was in water. I ran my first 5 miler the Bethlehem Christmas City Classic 2008. And, I did another first the Steel Man Triathlon 2009 at Lake Nockamixon. I've now started a running blog which I have no clue how to really manage just like my running. I am now training..I think, I hope for my first Half Marathon and olympic distnace tri. So, join me as I learn how the heck to write a running blog and how to run.

WARNING:

For all you grammar savvy folks out there be forewarned. This is a blog that is created from the mind of a most enthusiastic endurance athlete..at least I like to think myself one. I live to laugh and I hope I'll bring you a smile. So, please enjoy this, on the side, fun blog about swimming, biking, running, college, and life.

Neophyts Lament

"Hey Kathleen lets go!" said Meg as she walked down the dorm hall decked out in her spiffy spandex and long sleeve race shirt.
"I'm coming I'm coming, I can't find my shoes!" I returned as I scrambled under the caverns of my bed. Where the crap are my shoes I swear they where right over there.
"KATHLEEN!" *crash* "OW! hey! You scared me and I hit my head..ow ow ow stupid bed. AH HA!!! FOUND"M!" I dragged my shoes out and began lacing them up as Meg tapped her foot.
"I thought you said you'd be ready by 3 miss Kathleen its 3:15, what do ya have to say for yourself"
"I know I know I'm sorry. Anyway where are we running." I asked with a bit of uncertainty. For you see this was the first time I was going to seriously, and I emphasise the word seriously.
My life started out simple ya know the way any little girls life starts out....in Karate. Okinawan Shun Ru to be exact. Yep I was a kick but little kid who later found the joy of music. I took you the flute with coxing from my mom and have been playing it ever since the 4grade...I'm now a Junior in college :). I've gone to Intercollegiate band two years in a row now although I actually play the oboe in the Scranton Band. I started that in eighth grade. So by middle school I was a marching band kick butt kid. And then I decided I wanted to be a swimmer. I'm not sure why this urge came about. It could have been due to both of my parents being swimmers in their day and that got into my head, maybe its because I found an ease in the water when I was small and first took up lessons. Who knows either way I showed up at swim team meeting and became a swimmer. I was what I like to think the fastest of the slow and the slowest of the fast. I was nothing note worthy never getting that elusive 27.3 time for the 50yard. I wasn't a sprinter but, I never figured that out till around this year. During my time with the High School team I was slowly turned into a 200IM'er (a race in which you do two laps of each of the four strokes, butterfly, breast, back, free) and the 500 or 24 laps of the pool.
Then I graduated and am now currently at the University of Scranton as an Exercise science major with a nutrition concentration. After I graduate with my BS I'll be getting my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. On a side note: I've been currently searching different school options for my DPT although I already obtained a spot in the Scranton program when i got in my freshmen year. My choices so far are University of Maryland Baltimore campus, University of Delaware, Boston University, MGH institute of medical technology, and Arcadia University.
After Freshman year I discovered that the freshmen 15 was no myth but a legitimate demon lurking within the cakes and cookies and ice cream displayed in the cafeteria. Sophomore year dawned and it was my mission to lose not only the freshman 15 but the baby fat which donned my middle since I understood what a body image was. Now just to clear the air I am no looking for the stereotypical body of one of those American Eagle Ambecrombi models..heck no. I'm just against all forms of muffin tops hahah! So my mission began....and by the end of the year...failed. That's another story for another post. In the end I shot my metabolism and have started kicking it into gear again. On the bright side during Soph. year I took part in my first ever RACE! Woot. It was the Christmas City Classic 5 mile road race in Bethlehem, PA. Yep why not start out with a 5 miler for my running debut :). I was accompanied on my slightly insane venture by my two friends Meg and Caroline who where both runners in school but where bread for the 3 miler and where themselves a bit uncertain of the distance I had chosen. HAHA Lets just say I shocked them with my quick step up in the sport as we trained and they shocked themselves with two awesome times in the race both under 50min with Caroline coming in somewhere around 44min Meg around 46 and Me at 47. We plan on running this years race as well.
My next grand adventure was this summer. I did a Sprint distance Triathlon. IT ROCKED! I was so pumped after completing it i dominated the swim 79/500! Guess my ability for long distance swims came in handy. Then I failed miserable on the bike, it goes to show gear really counts. Trail bikes are no good in rolling hill conditions...ha those where not gentle rolling hills in my book. I hit 23mph coming down one and for me that's FAST! yet at the same time I was being past by bikes on down hills when no one was peddling. As my dad said, "you where the fastest one with a kick stand..." Anyway the 3 mile run came and it was torture I hated it with every skeletal muscle fiber in my body. And that's when I decided I really had to boost up my running if i wanted to get faster at this thing. And here we are. I am now hoping to run int the Disney Princess Half Marathon on March 7th, 2010 and all that's stopping me is money :) gotta make sure I can afford the flight and we are gooood toooo goooO! So, I hope that gives a bit of a background to me and my strange mission to go farther and longer.
